Without being insulting to the OP, let's be realistic. If you're a stickler for the "OE look", and are willing to spend approximately $15-1600 for a set of tires, then the re-pop Steelguards might be the way to go. If you simply want a decent performing tire, then the BFG T/A or the Cooper Cobra is a more reasonably priced alternative. If, by some chance you thing that the T/A is overdone, or you don't want the white letters of a "second tier" tire showing, you can always mount them black side out.

I had a couple of sets of the GoodYear GT Radials, as well as a couple sets of the Firestone S/S Radials, "back in the day". Liked the performance of them both, but they are "long gone"....

For 1975, GM designed their own "corporate tread" pattern tires. Both the tread and construction was designed by GM, and was provided to their various tire suppliers. The idea was that no matter where the tires came from, Goodyear, Uniroyal, or Firestone, the tires would be the same. This allowed GM to install any brand tire on a car, and know that the ride and handling would be the same, regardless of the brand. The GM spec tread, was also one of the first all-season tread pattern tires.

The GM spec tread wasn't designed for performance, but was more directed toward ride and noise reduction. The Goodyear Steelgard was one of the GM spec tread tires.

Considering that the Steelgard is a 40+ year old design, there are plenty of newer tires, such as the BFG T/A radials, that offer better wear, handling, braking and wet weather performance.

My big question is, has anyone purchased the retro tires and if so, what do they think of them?

You got THAT right!!! My 1977 T/A came with them, and they were on the car for about a week, after I picked it up from the dealer.....

I have a couple customers who have bought the Kelsey Steelgard's and GT Radials, but only for "trailer queens". The people I know who have bought them for their show cars, have been very happy with them, but I don't know anyone who's bought them for a car that's a "driver".
