Default Rear suspension...

Just opening for comments. My trailing arms seem to be missing a large shim (a contributing factor to squidginess); the rods seem canted (by maybe that’s normal); and finally there seems to be a coat hanger like wire kn there ???? Not normal ?! the spring looks fine to me.

I don't see a missing shim and the strut rods will be twisted like that when it's jacked up, they will be straighter when it's on the ground.

The rods move in a front to back arc, and the rubber bushing allows it to not bind up. Also why the hard, less flexible urethane bushing that I tried fell apart quickly. This is why I went to spherical rod ends.

I see, there may be no shim missing, but the shim that is in there is flopping around and quite loose. Looks like the castelated nut is missing a cotter pin.Hmmmmm

My new to me c3 had lots of squidginess. First friend with massive experience on old school car said to replace all the bushings. That wasnt the answer I was looking for. Second friend with massive old car experience identified strut rod bushings as main issue. Found a used set with shperical joints on ebay and it reduced unpredictable wander by 90%.

can you pull the shim out? the original ones look like this. there is a extra long pin that goes thru a hole in the frame and through the holes of the shims so they dont fall out.

sometimes people make custom shims that dont fall out so no pin is needed.

in this thread you can see the close end of the cotter pin and some shims just barely sticking out,

You may have the early shims that weren't slotted but just had a hole in the front. I would try tightening the bolt and get a cotter pin in there.
