Vortec head (Update)(long)
You can get spring that fit right in without any machining. You just have to take the damper out of the Z28 high perf spring by GM or go with Scoddin-Dickey High lift vortec spring. I got the last ones and without the damper, I get 300 Lbs at 1,20" which is enough for my 0,500" lift.
With the stock valve seal and no machining, you can get 0,525" lift. That's with a 0.040" clearence(recommended by GM).
The guy that does my head is gonna machine the head to receive standard valve cover. He puts 4 treaded inserts and does a little welding and buffing. All that for 60$ can. It was important as I want to keep stock appearence. I won't do the same for the intake but it's hard to see with the stock air cleaner.
He does a lot of vortec head for a racing categorie that have to stay with stock casting. He have a flow bench and the vortec flow about 217 cfm at 0,500" lift on it. Actually, that's the 906 casting. There's 2 casting for the vortec. The fisrt generation of 1996-late 1997 (906) and the 1998 to 2000 (855, I think). He said to me that the 855 flows a little less.(around 210 cfm) Anyway, various source of flow number are available, the Jim Pace site ie says that the stock vortec flows 239 cfm or chevy hi-perf says that with a little boal port, they acheive 239 cfm. Who or what machine shop should we beleive?
I got a 3 angles valve job and a little porting. He'll flow them to get 230 cfm.
I think these heads are the best buy I could have done. I got a block for 500$ can with them on top. Anyway, even if someone buys them new, I still think that there ain't a better deal out there (if you change your intake anyway).
