The weather cleared up and and quite a croud showed up at Mason Dixon Dragway today for a test and tune session. Over two hundred cars registered so the staging lines were very long and the track was not ideal. There were two other c3's and two zo6's. One of the c3's was a 70 LT-1 runnig 13.9's at 104. The zo6's were both running very low 12's at about 114.
I got three runs in and did a little better with each run. I raced it just like I drive it on the street with BFG 275-60 15 radial TA 's on the rear, 255's on the front, through the mufflers and on the motor (no nos or boost). The street tires along with slick track conditions made for challenging 60 foot times of 2.294, 2.141, and 2.104 seconds. I still managed to get it in to the 11's on the third run. The E/T's and Trap Speeds were 12.491 / 121.3, 12.035 / 123.66, and 11.912 / 123.91.
This was the first time at the track with the ZL-1 engine. My previous best with the iron 454 was 11.92 seconds and 121.44 MPH with a 1.98 sec sixty foot time but required open headers and removal of the front sway bar so I was prety hapy.
Wow, 97mph thats great. The best Iv'e run is a 7.52@93.55 1/8 with a 1.719 60ft. Never been down a 1/4 mile track. I have 430RWH / 466RWT 71 454 4 speed conv.
I also have nitrous 100-150 shot, running nitrous with a 4 speed can be SCARRY. Like missing a shift on the juice, so I shift a lot slower on nitrous. Iv'e run a 7.41@96-97mph with a 125 shot. It should be a lot faster with 525RWH /593RWT. But not being able to leave on the juice with out blowing the tires off, and letting off the nitrous between shifts hurts my times.
I'm probably going to put a automatic with a good stall in my car the first of the year, so I can get some good times out of my car.
You put some sticky tires on your vette and you'll see low to mid 11's easy.
Glenn454 ... That must be a neet kick in the pants when your nitrous comes on! Any problems with rear components surviving? I have been slowly beefing up the rear components on mine to the point I would feel comfortable runnig sticky tires but I'm not their yet. So far the track has not said any thing about running high 11's evan though I don't have a roll cage. I don't know how much farther I want to push it.
ZL1powr, I broke the planetary gears in the rear end last year. I bought the rear end used with 4.11 gears,so I knew it wouldn't last long.
I had a local racer build it for me with heat treated gears and stronger clutch pack springs, and hadn't had problem out of it since the rebuild.
I have rebuilt everything on the car so It's pretty tight. Keeping clutch's in the car has been a problem. Launching at 4-4500rpms with sticky tires and spraying nitrous is hell on clutch's. Here's my car http://home.mindspring.com/~mskay
I hope to get it painted some day. :)
Running same cam, 4.25" internally balanced crank, 077 heads, 5 speed, more cubes, haven't taken to the track yet, but your times give me a baromoter of what to expect
yep, the Muncy's tranny gear ratios make for anemic acceleration in the first two gears, but comes on like gangbusters in third and fourth, that explains the higher than normal 60' times
You definitely have the cool factor down pat with a ZL-1 in a C-3!
I think I finally got mine to run an 11.70 something with plain 'ole BFG 255/60 street radials with the 427 in it. But the odds of doing it more than once in a row was pretty slim.
I was running the same cam, ported oval ports and pump gas too. Just goes to show 427's are great motors!
I managed a few runs on 10x26" slicks before I scattered halfshafts and stub axles. I only launched at around 1500 rpm to save parts and just walked it out of the hole. My MPH was pretty similar to yours and I am sure a 10 sec run was in there too IF I could have really launched!
Wow, very cool car! Gotta love a ZL1 stroker. What's your displacement, around 480? How did the 4.25" crank fit? I don't know if I would have the guts to take a grinder to an aluminum block
