I recently purchased my 71 BB. It came with a Carter AFB Rebuilt carb on it. I cant seem to identify anything about the carb. Im not sure how to tell what CFM it is and if it is correct for the car. My engine is a 454/425hp with LS6 aluminum manifold and cast heads. Any one have a carter on there vette and know anything about these carbs?
The carbs are pretty easy to tune. They are still beeing made by Carter and Edelbrock. The only bad thing I can say about them is that they are sensative to hard cornering and hard braking.
Not sure what CFM ratings them came in from the factory.
Carter Carbs were on some '70-72 Corvettes. The date codes are A=jan, B=feb etc, except I was not used so J=sep. The 3 following represents the year ex. C1= March 1971 build date.
I remember recently reading that someone had bought carter out, can't remember where. Found this web page on a search, maybe it will lead to more. http://www.carburetorfactory.com/expvw04.html
Federal Mogul bought Carter a while ago. At some point Carter also sold the designs to their carbs to Weber who are casting them for both Carter and Edelbrock.
there should be a number stamped on the passenger side of the carb near the base in front of the the mounting bolt hole. post that number and i will try and help. :chevy
