Getting to the point of removing the outside SS trim. I pulled the pillar post and found the right corner rusted through - no surprise there! Some of the screws going into the header are rusted in place. I think these have to comeout to get the top trim piece out?
THe side screws and WS are out but the molding is glued on to the frame- what is the trick to removing the trim without bending it?
Thanks,
Gary
PS For 69 I think only the top trim is held by clips?
On my 78 only clips held the trim in place with some factory black adhesive, once I carefully remove with a borrowed tool (which made it very easy) the hard part was the clips. Like you stated the screws were rusted and two were under the glass. Thankfully everything under mine was clean and rust free.
if you are talking about the plastic 3 piece trim one going up either side of the windscreen and one across the top, they are held in by screws on my '82. I thought that the replacement of the top one would be cake until I saw that the predrilled holes didn't quite line up. I would reccommend that if you are replacing that part, try to get an undrilled part then drill your own holes. for the top there are something like 8 screws
Is this the piece that was holding your weatherstrip in ? If it is ,first you will have to take out the trim screws holding it on( some are covered in black butyl). Then all that is holding it on after that is more black butyl. The best way to get it off is to pry on it with something wide.I usually use a wide putty knife.Good luck! :seeya
Thanks guys,
I'm referring to the exterior SS trim. I have the interior trim off already. It looks like I have to remove the screws that are on the inside of the top header piece to loosen the the top SS plate. The side rails are off and the screws removed so it looks like only the butyl is holding it-but it's tight and I don't want to bend the SS trim. The side trim is "C" shaped to clamp around the frame and windshield. The top exterior molding is where the clips are but I'm not sure if it's sandwiched in between the top plate and frame?

The upper reveal molding is snapped into the clips after the header molding piece (across the top) is attached to the corner moldings - 1 screw into each corner molding sliding nut and 2 screws close to the center. The corner moldings have 2 screws (oval head) on the inside and 2 screws on the outside which you cannot really get to with the windshield in place. The side pieces overlap the upper reveal molding about 3/8 of an inch on each end.
Back to the side moldings - there are 2 screws that hold only the inner piece (the one that wraps around the windshield) to the frame and the rest of the screws (3 or 4) hold the outer piece (the pillar weatherstrip goes into this one) and the inner piece on to the frame. When you get all the screws out, use a long flat knife to cut whatever adhesive is used. If the shield has been replaced before, they could have used butyl (correct) on the molding or urethaned the whole thing (some do). The total urethane method is the nightmare because it holds so well. There should be urethane between the two moldings, and butyl where the inner one wraps aroung the frame toward the windshield. Between the inner molding and the pillar post should only be a foam strip which has adhesive on the molding side.
I hope this isn't confusing - if it is, I will gladly explain the details if you need it. I have been analyzing this for weeks to be sure I would do it "right". Finally put the windshield in last night - I am going to put all the molding in place today - so it is burnt into my brain! Hell, it was even in my dreams last night - I'm spending all too much time on this thing!
Dang, Paul, that's detail! Thanks for the post on this. I posted last week and got good replies, but this is great. I need to do mine (also a 69 roadster) and will print this out. Any picture of it apart or in progress? Can't ever have to many pictures!
Thanks, Hans and you are welcome. Actually someone else requested also, so I have been taking pictures, but I don't know how they will look - we'll see when I download them and do the commentary. I'm going out to the garage in about 20 minutes to take more with the 'shield in and as I assemble the trim. So far, things have gone well and I may just be done with the outside (windshield and trim, anyway) today.
Paul
Thanks Paul,
I have to go back and look it over and then I'm sure to have some more ???? I probably won't get to it until tomorrow after work.
If you do have pictures I would like to see them too.

Well folks, all went pretty well today. All the molding is on and the butyl and urethane is curing away undisturbed and warm until tomorrow.
Wasn't too bad at all and the biggest PITA was putting the lower pillar post seals on - a stubby screwdriver would barely fit between the door and the pillar - and with butyl all over the gloves, screw, and screwdriver, I had many an insult for each item that hit the floor! Worse is when I finally got the screw started and discovered the goopy glove finger was wound around the screwdriver - I was real thrilled about that one - I insulted the poopie out of it and it didn't do it again..... If you tackle this, have a LARGE box of gloves, plenty of rags and lacquer thinner! I bet I went through 20 pairs of gloves.
I took a bunch of pictures which came out great - but they are huge (about 9MB worth), the smallest is about 324K. A few important ones were fuzzy and I need to retake them. I'm beat tonight, so I'll take them tomorrow and then I will work on making the pic's smaller. I don't know what would be the best thing to do with them so they can be shared by anyone who wants them. Is there a common area on the "forum" where I can stuff them with comentary?
