I started that post a while back and tried to get Sallee Chevrolet to make some but they said that we would have to come up with at least 4000 people/emblems before they would make them. Thats when I gave up. The Z-34 solution did come up then too I just don't want to rummage around junk yards looking for them and you know your local Chevy dealer is going to charge an arm and a leg for them. I'll wait until someone comes up with a cool solution and then get 2 of them. I am a lazy bastard ain't I ????? :yesnod:  :yesnod:

Re: Source for custom ZZ4 Emblems??? (Smokehouse69)
I have sent you some more pics to show emblems mounted and a dimensioned pic/drawing. I you can post it for all who are interested. I prefer to contact sleepy GM and ask their performance department why the hell they don't include a lousy $5 emblem when they sell their ZZ4 engines. I understand that FORD (ouch!) is thinking about a crate engine with its own emblem.

Re: Source for custom ZZ4 Emblems??? (Ghostrider)
Ghostrider thanks for sending me the pictures of your decals. I want an emblem though. I can have all of the decals you guys want made.I will see my buddy that has the computer programed cutting machine that he uses to make lettering for signs etc. If anyone else has a good picture of a ZZ-4 or can email / post a good font style I wll see how much I can get a 100 or so made for. What do ya think? bright RED? 1"x 1' fonts? Probably wind up being 1" tall x 4" long.
I spoke with Kevin Williams and he is very excited about making a 1"x 1" character from .090 or so Aluminum that has a .035 - .050 wide recessd edge that can be left as is or boardered with black etc. The center can be painted, brushed, or polished giving many varibles to the emblem. This is very close to what GM made to go on the painted L- 48 / L-82 hood emblem ( red&black) or the 1980 L-82 fender side emblem that was polished.
The individual fonts can be loaded into a setting block and positioned and spaced as needed and then covered with a sticky tape to hold them into place until they are applied. This will give Kevin the ability to have a custom order processed very quickly and at less cost.
I cut and pasted the post I made earlier in this thread to show him what we needed and he was very excited at attempting this project.
It seems that many of the new car manufactorers are going with this same procedure and I actually like it better than the old style with the bars that hold the emblems together as one piece.
I am looking at getting a set of ZZ-5 emblems made for my '80 and place them on the fender just like the factory L-82 Emblem was placed. I want mine to have the black trimmed edge with a polished center. What da ya think?

This sounds like the ticket. Did he give you a quote on the price each unit would be? If we can get enough forum members with ZZ4's will the price go down a bit? I think the graphics should be the same font and size as the 454 and 427 (ZZ4 not ZZ-4) emblems on the BB sharks and the color should be a blue center and chrome border (IMO) You might want to go to the C1-2 forum and start a link to this post because I know there a a few ZZ4 powered cars there as well as some ZZ3's also.

Re: Source for custom ZZ4 Emblems??? (theandies)
John I see your point on the dash. I guess I just had a mindset from the L-82 and the thought carried over.
The post from Corvette From Hell above is Kevins and he says he should have something going soon. I also realized that the other forums would be intersested, but thought we should wait until Kevin has the goods to present before going to that step. I also had no idea from my e-mail with Kevin that he was going to have something this quick.
I understand your wanting the 60's / 70's style font but part of the reason for the L-82 style was that the font was going to be much easier to make. The previous style font was recessed in the center, not the boarder. This font has to be milled or cast to be obtained. The font from the L-82 can be cut out and then simply have a boarder engraved on it to give us a two tier font that will allow you to paint the center, brush, or polish and then provide an optional recessed boarder to black out or leave it polished. The contrast possibilities are numerous with this style font.
If you just have to have a certain style of font, Kevin is still your man. I'm sure he will be more than happy to accomadate you.
The idea behind the style of font I have requested is that it provides a generic style and be compatable with most Chevrolets and has the capability of so many varibles in polishing, coloring will be easier and more cost efficent for all involved.
This isn't my personel project and that is why I thought I would post here and see what you guys thought about it. I am very confident that Kevin will present you with an emblem that will look great and will be capable of blending with many era's of Corvettes and other vehicles.
I inquired about this for my personel vehicle and Kevin and I had a few e-mails back and forth, so this was only a two man brainstorm. The idea of indiviual characters was just an observation from todays manufactorers and I personally like the individuals much better that the one piece with the ugly bars in between the fonts.
Kevin agreed that it would be much easier to make the single character and set them much as you would newspaper type. Then apply a locator sticky to hold them in place until you apply them. This is the way it is done today and I think I much prefer it. By using the single font Kevin could process many characters at a time and stock them. Then when you want a special emblem all he would have to do is to set the type and he's done with your request.
I hope this works out for us and especially for Kevin. I see a great demand for this type service with no one providing it at this time. Let's help Kevin get this going and then we'll prod him into expanding the process to cover other needs with different types of fonts.
Hey Kevin what about a special Aluminum Console / Gauge inlay for the '77 -'82 Vette? or ............................
Re: Source for custom ZZ4 Emblems??? (Smokehouse69)
What is a ZZ4?
I remember sometime back someone asked if anyone knew of a source to get specialized emblems created. I never did see the outcome of that query. I'm interested in getting some ZZ4 emblems created to mount on the hood of my car (whenever I finally buy a L-88 hood) in basically the same position of LT-1 emblems or L-82 emblems.
Anyone know a source for custom emblems?
Re: Source for custom ZZ4 Emblems??? (Smokehouse69)
Here's some lettering samples I've been working on below. Something to remember with the Z's is that they're basically the same straight-up as slanted, so I've drawn the numbers slanted. The numbers also don't necessarily match the Z's they're next to in style or width at the moment...
Pics below are some emblems I just made for a friend of mine's new GMC pickup. Note the 8100's are "wedge" shaped, they're going on hood scoops. These are the "simple" versions (no outlines), they're .090" thick 6061 aluminum that I've polished (as good as I can with my equipment), they're not chromed. These are "connected" too, I painted the connections black (same as his truck).
I'm still learning about the best way to make these, they still go kinda slow at the moment. One problem is holding the aluminum while machining it--since I have no way to screw these down to anything, I rely on good double-sided tape. Another issue is the different sized tools needed, and getting all the offsets correct, and I'm still working on "procedure"...anyway, I still have some work to do...
Re: Source for custom ZZ4 Emblems??? (Corvette From Hell)
I like the style of the second ZZ-4 emblem and the second ZZ-5 emblem, although they all look
I'd certainly be interested in a couple of sets of those babies! Those 496 emblems look awefully good too!

Kevin I agree with Smokehouse! Send me three of the #2 style ZZ5's !!!!!!
Thanks Kevin these are going to be great on my car. JIM :seeya
I also like the second one but I would prefer it without the dash as in ZZ4 not ZZ-4.
I'll take 2 also
Good job, those emblems look awesome

Re: Source for custom ZZ4 Emblems??? (Corvette From Hell)
Kevin.
You did a great job on the emblems.
In short, I like font #3 with the number of item #2.
Perhaps you could post a picture of my hood emblem ZZ4 that was based upon an actual font as described below:
1. Letters should have distinct unique modern styling with slanting, associated with speed.
2. The ZZ4 as advertised by GM had NO dash (like in ZZ-4) anywhere in the lettering.
3. All letters/numbers should have slightly 3-D rounded polished or chrome surface as in FORD’s 5.0 (I don’t like old-fashioned painted in-fill or retro flash-back lettering).
4. I prefer the 3rd set of sleeker “thinned” ZZ’s (with squared–off Z-tails) consistent with the font.
5. I suggest a change to a more stylish Z’s with a “squared”, rather than a “tapered” droop or upturn at the tail (see picture of my ZZ4 emblem).
Good luck, and let Ecklers and other speed shops know that you are the source for X’mas lettering and presents for all ZZ4 owners.
