Default Woodruff key question.....

So I managed to damage the crank sprocket woodruff key while installing the harmonic balancer. After doing some research I learned woodruff keys are a press fit and they should be certain height form the crank snout. My problem was they weren't press fit tight enough resulting in a leading edge that was too high. That easy enough, I dropped by the speed shop this morning and picked up 2 new keys.

My question is this: Should the harmonic balancer engage the crank sprocket key?

Absolutely. The slot is curved. So is the bottom of the key. If one side is up too high, tap it down with a hammer.

Thanks. That's easy enough.

Just a suggestion that you make sure the keyway in the crank didn't get damaged. I had the same issue as you did in a 300zx. Replace the key without looking closely and the balancer came loose. the key was for the timing gear behind the balancer and the gear slid enough that the car wouldn't run. Hope that's not the case for you
