Default Header/Sidepipe Custom insert Idea looking for input

First I am looking for a "not too loud" system and maintain good performance (427 with Cam.....)
My quest for header/side pipe that works well, Is not too loud and doesn't scorch the wife's legs
Here is my plan let me know what you think.

Using Magna-Flow mufflers with cones welded to the ends, The muffler will drop into the side pipe and the cone sits right at the
reduction point where it slides on the header. There is a section of pipe welded to the back of the muffler then an adapter to increase the final
exhaust exit size. The whol.e this will be wrapped in header tape. The dard brown rings are header wrap, wrapped thick enough to be a snug fit in the side pipe.
I will use stainless wire the wrap the header tape rings so they stay put and solid.

Magna-flow with cone prior to welding

To reduce heat I could vent the side pipes in the bottom and side facing the car. - A series of holes or slots. As the exhause will travel through the inner pipe which terminates very close to the side pipe exit I am wondering if this would keep the side pipe cooler and not require a heat shield.

Looking for thoughts.

I think vents will reduce heat … but not significantly … suggest shielding or J&J stock.

Now if I wrap the entire inner system with header tape and have the inner system terminate at the end od the side pipe, can I keep the side pipes cool. Or at least not 700 degrees

There was a thread a few years back where a fella did what you are doing and wrapped it as well.......the result was a much cooler outer pipe.
I think the shields are hideous......kills the look for me. I think others would agree.

The 22" long, 2.25" core Magnaflow is what I used. Very nice sound that really opens up under acceleration. A cone on each end, one to capture the insert as you have shown, and another to center the aft end will make installation. The smaller the contact area at the end the better as the bore of the tube is not consistent due to the welded on hangars.
For heat control you certainly wrap the inserts but I would also consider a ceramic coating such as Jet Hot or maybe both.

I wanted - performance- noise and heat control so I did a total custom sidepipe-

Mines a combo- straight pipe and/or muffler. Using electric cut-outs to go between straight unmuffled to full muffler-

I made my own 20" long glasspac type muffler- as from what I have read after 20" the noise reduction is minimal.

perfed SS metal- insinkerator (SS steel) garbage disposal rings hold it together.

I used both fiberglass packing - exhaust wrap and Federal Mongul Thermoflex knitted exhaust sleeves.

Looking at your ideas- a couple of thoughts-

1) The muffler would be more effective farther from the engine.

2) I'd perf the cone and use some stainless steel wool type packing- that will help lower the sound and performance- you want to stop the sound from bouncing around

3) fiberglass packing AND exhaust wrap- around the insert- should help insulate- here's a good article on heat control on a Viper

https://motoiq.com/project-viper-gts...ield-products/

****I'm not a muffler guy- but spent 20 years in the audio industry and was fortunate to work with Lotus (when I was with Kenwood ) on a noise cancellation muffler design- where we used speakers with out of phase information to help noise cancellation in the cockpit- works good with headphones -but not so much in the whole car!!!*****

I used stainless steel tie wraps- Summit Racing sells them

I wrapped it with exhaust tape- to keep the fiberglass from blowing out-

Here's the cut out design-

Used V-bands to clamp together- and can change out insert if I don't get enough noise reduction

I helped a fellow who bought several year-old cup chassis to convert to another series which raced overseas. They had metalized flexible composite panels for exhaust heat shielding and they were stenciled Boeing with its corp logo. Some of that found its way into local circletrack cars and ...dang, was it effective! I've tried to look this stuff up with no luck but someone else might even know just what it is.

Before you get too involved in making these take a look here.

I think you will find what you want is already available.

HA- now they selling the Thermoflex!!!!

You can get it a lot cheaper on eBay- from some surplus guy in Florida!!!

They work great- and won't rust out the exhaust- use some SS ties from Summit Racing - work great and are the not that expensive.

I covered the splash guards with some Heatshield stuff-

And used DEI Form a barrier over the 2-1 collector-
