Default new C3

So after several years of not having a C3 (sold the LT1) and only having C7 Stingray and ZO6. I decided to get another C3, 72 automatic. This is all original, but I would like to that way but upgrade the engine. Is the stock engine capable of being rebuild/upgraded to a higher compression piston to get 350-375 hp out of it or just get a crate motor?

? Do you mean retain OE heads AND retain overall OE appearance?

Yes, I was going to port and polish the heads. The current state of the engine is not ideal, burning oil and leaks. I am planning on upgrading the intake manifold so I can use the FiTech EFI and a higher ration rockers to the 1.6:1 ration. Keeping the Ram style exhaust manifold, but going with the 2.5 dia. My whole goal is to pull the motor out and have it rebuilt with high compression piston and a mild cam. But that depends on the cost of the re-build, if it gets close to the crate motor cost. I will get the crate motor instead.

You can reach your goal.
local asphalt circletrack motor rules specify iron OE heads, No vortec, minimum chamber 70cc. That leaves 76cc OE milled to 70cc.
rules No port No polish No 2.02 valve
rules say flattops Not above deck.ends up right at 10:1 scr
rules 360ci max
rules stock 3.48 stroke minimun crank weight 55 lbs.
rules flat tappet only MAX .480 at valve.
rules 2 barrel carb max 350 cfm, add weight if 500
rules allow headers
rules edelbrock performer 2101 unmolested intake with 2 bbl adapter
rules 104 octane MAX & they check spec grav
Most of the top 5 motors make about 360 hp at crank ... I've dynoed many of them.

You're gonna P&P, maybe better intake and FI, have access to more cam ... even with pump gas & iron exhaust ...you should hit your mark but You're gonna Need a real good tune and No detonation ... dunno if your FI controls ignition. You can do it! & probably then some.

Upgrading old heads is a waste of time and money.

I would get a good cam, domed pistons and decent heads. The key is the heads. 64 cc heads and aluminum if you can afford it. A crate motor priced for what you'll save rebuilding it yourself isn't going to come with good aluminum heads . If your having someone else build it of course they could be closer. 365 hp isn't hard goal at all with today's cams and heads. My 327 is built to the Chevy II L79 specs rated at 365hp at the crank with iron world class heads 64cc. 2.02/ 1.65 valve solid lifter comp cams cam .488 lift. Read this. And look up L79 motors. You can get that horsepower easily with the longer stroke of the 350. The info is the same

to OP
is your plan to keep OE heads & use iron exhaust manifolds because ???...
1) You want the motor to APPEAR OE aka STOCK??
OR
2) You want to LIMIT COSTS ??
