Default Woo, woo! Blue gas is fun!!

Got my hands on some blue gas (leaded 100octane aviation fuel) & kicked my timing back up to factory settings (had it retarded to stop pinging). Woo-eee, does she go on that stuff! 'Bout snap your neck. Stuff's expensive, but I think I'm going to have a serious blue gas habit from here on out. I'm running it in a 1:1 mix with 93octane pump gas. After I run this tank out (probably pretty soon!), I'm gonna try it 2:1 and see if that'll work as well and save me a few bucks.

Reminds me of the good old days of Sunoco 103. My dad's 66BB loved that stuff!!!

Just curious,
What's a gallon of avgas running down south? 100LL has remained at $2.35/gal at my fbo for a good while

I tried to get some race fuel before going to the strip 3 weeks ago and they just removed it all and replaced it with kerosene :( . I never tried the stuff & was looking forward to it. I did add some octane boost made by NOS and that seemed to improve the idle and smooth out the engine some :) .

I don't know anything about the differences in gas but was advised NOT to run avgas, the guys I talked to said that it's a different blend and shouldn't be run in car motors. Like I said, I don't know how true that is, don't know a thing about blending fuels. I run about 5 gallons (about 30%) of VP Racing fuel C-12 (leaded 108 octane) with each tank, 10.5:1 compression and it seems to run very nicely. Be advised it's NOT cheap at around $5 a gallon. I can get CAM 2 locally as well, it's a little cheaper and I believe they have 100 and 110 octane. VP has a web site but I haven't been able to find the one for CAM 2.

JB-

Glad you found some higher octane fuel. It is a different car isn't it?

Where did you get it?

I am with Shark Tank. I have heard that AV Gas is bad for the car, but again, this is not confirmed. So be careful.

I am mixing 100 octane BP with 93. At a minimum, I put 5-6 gallons in, but most of the time I put more in than that. I love the smell and the car just runs so good on it.

My mechanic has my timing bumped up a little more than the stock 36 degrees. I believe he told me he has it set around 40 at full advance. I have no problem with pinging at WOT even on a hot day with 5 gallons.

I would attempt to confirm whether or not running AV gas is OK or not. Sounds like a good question for the forum. I will post and get a read for us.

I sure would hate for you to damage your motor. I know you can order the VP stuff by the 5 gallon container and by the barrel. That may be the way to go.

JB it doesn't take much of that gas to make a real difference, I remember back in the days when the only leaded gas you could still get was leaded regular, we used to mix that low octane leaded regular with 93 Octane unleaded. It made a real difference on old high compression engines. I remember one of the hot rod mags doing a test and the resulting octane was something like 97 octane.
I have been given the impression that a mixture of 2 to 7 av-gas to unleaded premium, will give you plenty of octane. I wish I could remember where I heard this or read this, but it sticks in my mind.
There are some serious hotrodding sites out on the web where this subject has been beaten to death. There are some very weird and probably dangerous formulas out there for "rolling your own" octane booster.

Luckily, the Sunoco station in my town sells thier GT100 octane unleaded racing fuel. Unluckily, it's $3.50 a gallon :(

My '68 LOVES it!

The biggest problem with avgas is different vapor pressure. I can't exactly remember what the effect is, but I think it vapor locks more easily. Joe
