Default 81 Electric Cooling Fan

I replaced the fan clutch on my 81 yesterday because the old one never released and it sounded like I was driving an air boat instead of a Corvette....lol. When I got in there I see that there is an electric fan in front of the mechanical one. Did they all have that?

Autozone asked me if the car had the "heavy duty cooling option". I'm not sure what that is exactly but was wondering if that was the electric fan option?

The new fan clutch is much smaller that the one I took off and it releases like I think it should. I haven't driven it yet with the new fan clutch but it's winter time so I don't expect any cooling issues right now but I do live in Texas so the heat will be coming!

Yes. All 81s and 82s have the auxiliary fan. 79 and 80 L-82 cars also had them.

mine only ran one time,
car was a week or two old.
i tested it couple years ago and it fire right up.
noisy sum gun.
was a time i thought about trying to hook it up for cooling.
it is set to run at 235 deg head temp with the stock temp sensor and i was going to put it on a relay and manually run it when needed.

Yes, 81 and 82 had the electric fan. A good fan clutch to install is a Hayden 2714 for your 81 which is the standard clutch. If you get the heavy duty clutch it will sound like an air-boat at WOT.

Yes the factory set point for the sender is too high imo. It never came on in my '81 either. I changed sending units. The one I purchased had a lower on and off set point than the factory sender. I still wasn't satisfied with the cooling of the fan in conjunction with the main fan. Upgraded to dual Spal fans when I put in a new radiator.

The temp 'run' point on that aux fan was set pretty high. That fan only runs when the coolant temps are "excessive" due to long idling in elevated air temps. I think it only ran after coolant got to 220*F or so.
