The old dash on my 79 was cracked and broken beyond repair so I decided to replace it with a new one. I quickly discovered that all the openings for the air vents and speaker grills are to small, the shroud around the wiper switch will not fit either. I have read that you need to heat the dash to open up the cutouts. Need help doing this, anyone done this would love your inputs of how you overcame these issues. Just how hot do I need to go. I thought of wrapping a tappered wooden wedge with aluminum foil, heating it in the oven then force it into the opening for the air vents to expand them. I am very nervous of damaging this new dash so please help.
Please can anybody share their experience with this. I contacted Corvette America and they are going to take this dash back. I can either have a refund or a replacement dash. So who makes the best replacement dash for a 79, I really cannot move forwards until I get some sound feedback from Forum members who have been down this path.
ratflinger where did you get your pad from? And also thanks for responding as I thought what I had was the norm but I was wrong.

I tried an Al Knoch. I sent it back because it was horrible.
I then bought a CA, and it was much better. 2 years later, I have issues.
That's the two. Good luck.
I did a write up on our facebook page years ago about how to install this pad, unfortunately I've removed the post and pictures. It's so hard to keep up with Facebook, our tech site and the corvette forum that I'm pulling down the facebook page and saving all the pictures and info as I do. But I'm moving all the facebook stuff from the last 10 years to the tech site. (it just takes time).
But I still have the pictures from this and possibly I can help you. The best pad I've installed is the CA pad and I've had very few issues, but there are tricks.
I'm kind of busy today, but maybe tomorrow I can dig out the pictures and post the info on our tech site. I'll try. If you want, email me at Service@Willcoxcorvette.com I'd be more than happy to help you... but I think you can fit what you have without returning it.

Can you expound on the issues you are having, if you could share I would really appreciate it as I have no alternative but to go this route.

We had a heat wave, and now it's pulling back from the windshield. The last CA unit lasted over 10 years.
The speaker grill covers won't fit. Believe me, Doug and I spent two days with an exacto knife and heat gun messaging the parts to fit.
The Al Knoch unit was pure trash. I have a list somewhere, but is was crap.

Bird,
Can you post pictures of the issue's so that I can see it?
If you post some pics, I'll show this to Kevin on Monday possibly n the two of us we'll have an idea about how to help you. Kevin did the last installation here and he's my interior c3 go to guy.
I'll be jogging tomorrow morning (with my buddy I've been friends with for over 50 years) from my office... and yes... at my age I still exercise every day... I'm a nut job and do 4-5 miles a day...

Bird... the speaker grills... First I'd get a cold wet rag handy, then I'd heat the pad with a blow drier, then force the grill in place, push it downward hard and then apply the cold wet rag.
Vinyl when heated will shrink up when you it cools on it's own, but vinyl will stretch when heated and if you cool it with a wet cold rag it will hold it's place. I also wonder if possibly the foam between the sub-straight and the upper vinyl hasn't moved as well... But if you get it hot enough both will collapse if you install that grill and hold it down hard.. .then hit it with the rag. The same goes for the wiper switch bezel. I was hoping you had a 1978 to 1979 Early car which used the metal wiper switch bezel... they make this easier because they are metal... so you can just heat the bezel. But you should have a plastic wiper bezel and I'd use the same technique as above for the speaker grille.... I'd heat the dash pad with a blow drier and then slip the bezel in place holding it where it belongs, then slap the cold to it.
Can you email me some other pictures of the windshield fit issue... Maybe one from a bit further back.
Honestly, I've not really had any of these issues upon doing the install of the dash pad. I didn't get time to publish the install pictures today but I'll try to do this tomorrow.

We tried all the tricks on Birds dash but and it looked good for a while but the dash's on the market nowadays are horrible. Shoddy workmanship and materials.

Hopefully he'll send me some pics that I can look at to my personal email (service@willcoxcorvette.com).
Like I said above, I'll be in Anaheim the 20 of June... but that's a long way away right now... (or there about) and possibly I can take a look at this first hand.
I'll be traveling with two females (no offense to the ladies of the forum, but you gals travel with a ton of luggage.. ).. so you know that'll be complicated... lol.
My youngest daughter graduates this spring with her ESL degree, and this is her graduation gift... I call her my nerd but she is a jewel... (she speaks three different languages)...and she is a ELO fan as am I too... .. imagine that,
We're taking her to three concerts in two weeks on the west coast.... But If I can make it happen I will try my hardest.
