Sorry to have bothered everyone, was able to remove by pulling up from bottom. I had bent pan bracket trying to get car to shift up from 1st gear before realizing vacuum line was off, now to get it back to correct shape.
Was able to pick up good used cable locally and have it now on car. Necessary to remove the four bolts holding shift assembly and lift entire thing up and out to get cable connected. Cable up from bottom and connected to shifting housing before replacing and fastening the four bolts again.
