1978 w/ cruise control. Speedometer works when I first start driving and then goes dead in about 3-5 miles. I was thinking transducer? The cruise control hasn't worked in a few years but the speedo always did. I would prefer to replace the transducer instead on running the one piece cable. Any thoughts?
Disconnect the upper cable from the cruise transducer and hook the drill up. If the speedo works fine, hook the cable back up and disconnect from the trans- or get another cable and plug that into the transducer and run it from there.
Lube bottom cable with graphite, light oil or grease. Pull cable" all the way out" with needle nose pliers. Make sure both ends are still square, lube it and slide it back in. Upper cable requires disconnecting it from speedometer to lube. See it helps. Car can stay on ground. If ends are rounding transducer could be binding hot. A small philips screwdriver will spin transducer it should spin freely, with or without upper cable attached, if it doesn't transducer is faulty. When speedometer stops would be best time to check it. There still a chance speedometer gear is worn, because car has to raised to check it; I would check last if everything else checked ok.
