Replacing 4 spd with 5 spd tranny
Hey guys, new to the site here. Needing to post a question, the manual transmission of my 71 vette has a bad 3rd gear. Rather than bothering with fixing it, I am thinking on replacing it with a S10 5 spd. manual transmission, however the guy that I am buying it from says it may not fit. Is that possible? Thought it didn't matter if it was in a V6, that it would fit the same?

That looks like it may be from a 60 degree V6, bellhousing wont fit, not sure on the input shaft.
The gear ratios are really wide, so unless you have a 2.73 rear, they wont work well.
The shifter position is way off too.
Not worth the effort.

You need a t5 from a camaro-firebird V8 83-92. Preferrably 88-92. There is a tag on the side of that trans. 13 56 then a 3 digit number. That will tell you what it came from and gear ratios. http://www.britishv8.org/articles/bo...t5-id-tags.htm

I had a 92 Camaro with a T-5 and it took a BEATING.....although if you were really into it....the plastic synchros would turn to rubber and shifting became impossible til it cooled off.
I would seriously consider something else....you will need to convert to a hydraulic clutch too.......not a weekend project.
You can fix the Muncie for $500-700 and bolt it back in.

I did alot of research on 5 speeds and different ones used over the years. Those T5 trannys wont handle alot of torque. The better ones are the WC-T5's, they call them World Class T5's.
You want a T56 or a TKO.Neither is a bolt up without the proper conversion kits. Fix the muncie. They are easy and fairly simple to rebuild. You can replace all the bearings and gears for around a grand.

You can repair or replace the Muncie for less than a grand. There is no shortage of Muncies for sale now that the 5-speed swap has become so popular. I hear of them selling for around $500 from time to time. The preferred solution is to swap in a TKO 500 or 600 if you can come up with the cash. The S-10 trans won't last long. About 20 years ago I swapped a mild small block into my S-10 4x4 with a 5-speed. It still belongs to a friend of mine. Its on its fourth transmission, and neither one of us really ever drove it hard.
