the L-88 hood uses a seal with a specific shape that sits on the core support. I can tell by the mark on the under side of the hood that it seals across the hood Do you have this seal?

I did a Bubba and bought a thicker/bigger seal/list at the local hardware store. It ended up perfectly. Easy to remove & replace if I ever sell the car.
being a 79 that complicates things since the L-88 seal was designed for an earlier vehicle. It's only $27 so it may or may not seal correctly on a 79. You may be better off making your own.
I went a different route. I fiber glassed a support onto the hood in the shape of the foam seal pictured in the ZIP ad. I attached a foam seal to the bottom. It seals perfectly.

Can you share a pic so we can see what you have done?
I have a front seal I made from a stock seal and another piece of the same kind of foam cut, shaped and glued together it works perfect. I also have a rear seal I made that combined with the stock seal works great too. The stock seal is on the rear of the hood, but where the cold air intake is, there is no place for it, so it is cut out there. The hood comes down on the seal I made and the hood folds it down to seal across the entire length of the fabricated seal.
