Default LT1 in a '77 Question

OK, I know this has been done.

Would this ... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=1871685633 ... be a possible starting point?

Would the 4L60E go in without a lot of tunnel cutting & such?

Or would I be doing myself a BIG favor sticking with a 700R4 or 2004R?

I think this type of project is pretty far down the road, but I am thinking about it and the possibilities.

Thanks for any help.

Very doable. The 4L60E is the same thing as a TH700R4 except it has an electronic valvebody (it won't shift without a computer). It fits without floor modifications.

Be aware that the Impala SS Lt1 is not identical to the F-car LT1. The impala version has iron heads and makes 25 hp less, 260 vs 285.

Very doable, do yourself a favor and hop it up a bit before you stick it in though. New cam and heads atleast. Headers too.

Thanks guys.

I wasn't sure about the 4L60E. That's good news :)

I can't help but think that this would be a much better upgrade than simply putting a 700R4 in mine; especially since the engine has not had any work on it as far as I know and is showing 150k miles.

Even with the money to have an engine & trans checked, plus headers, new oil pump, etc., I would think this would be a more cost effective solution too.

When I start looking, I'll probably be looking for the latest model F-body donor I can get, but I guess I'll have to investigate other special option engines too (for deals). 300 flywheel HP would be plenty for the way I drive :yesnod:

Thanks again; more to think about.
