Hi I am trying to diagnose no spark on my 72 454 restoration. Stock single points distributor. I have 10.5 volts on + side of coil when cranking which is the same reading on the battery when cranking. 6.9 volts in run position. New points gapped at .019. New cap and rotor. tried 2 new correct coils. Wiring harness is new from lectic limited. plug wires are new from lectric limited. Test light blinks when put on the - side of coil when cranking. I took apart the starter solenoid and cleaned all internal connections. I am stumped.
I'm probably making a fool of myself, but here goes. On my 72 sb, the wire from the coil and the wire from the condenser have to be in a specific order when attached to the points. I read that over 40 years ago. I would have to go out and look at mine to be sure, but, I think the condenser wire has to be on the outside. This is a stab in the dark. It sure would be an easy fix.
One other thing. Two years ago I bought a new condenser that failed immediately. That was a no spark situation also. Had never had that happen in 45 years of tuning this car.
Changed back to the used blue streak points and condenser gapped at .016 and started over locating top dead center before installing the distributor. Fired right up. Thanks.
why do you have only 10.5 volts when cranking, that would indicate a very discharged battery?
you dont own a dwell meter so you can set it to 30 degrees while cranking?
if you hold the coil wire end, with insulated pliers, that is normally inserted into the center of the cap near metal do you see a spark?
