Hi all having a really weird fuel gauge error, idle in park or neutral and at rev above idle while driving the gauge is pegged past full, BUT in gear at idle it will slowly come down to where the real reading is.
done a lot of reading up on this and couldn’t find anyone else with this problem
It’s a 1975, car off it reads fine as well, nothing weird i can see on voltage,
Just set in a 383 with patronix flamethrower 2 coil and distributed and wondering if there is something weird there. Running well so doesn’t seem to be any electric issue
I suspect it is a wiring issue, also. The GM gauges will go to full-scale when there is a break in connection with the sending unit signal wire. I suspect some 'mechanical' movement of that wire due to the position of the shifter linkage and/or mechanism. I'm not certain if losing ground connection, but retaining a good signal wire connection, would send the gauge to full-scale. But it is a possibility that should be checked. In either case, I believe it to be due to some part movement that causes the loss of an electrical connection.
I'd check the connection at the sender... see if it's loose.
But you should also go to my tech site and review all the articles on the fuel gauge... I'm sure you'll find your issue.
When a gauge pegs just above the right hand side face rivet, it's missing ohms input...
So this could either be a wire issue, and issue with the sender or something else. The video testing fuel gauges will tell you... the gauge won't lie, it'll tell you what the condition is then you have to find the issue.
