Folks, got a 71, bird cage very good, stored inside for 40 years, paint is original, not bad, a few chips and little scrapes, I usually stripped my vettes when I was young for a repaint, but
I am now thinking of just sanding this thing down with 600 wet and shooting a coat of expoxy primer on it then base/clear, or maybe even water base so there is No reaction
to anything. it's silver and hate the color, will be going to the blue. of course interior is out, shows it's age. So why should I strip it? the new paint stripper on the market is crap,
I live in Canada and cannot buy the good stuff anymore. Thanks Mike.
Possibly acrylic lacquer is OK where you live? PPG has discontinued theirs but it might still be available. I wouldn't strip it unless I'd exhausted all possible options.
If the paint is in good shape, that is, not peeling or cracking, just sand it down and paint it. Seriously doubt there would be any reaction to a 40 year old well cured paint. In fact, using lacquer primer in limited ares under enamel use to be a thing.
compound it and see what the 48 year old lacquer looks like. you just pulled it out of storage? you will find lots of stuff to do to it. it'll be pretty enough to justify all the stuff that just got 40 years older on it. plus a lot of these were driven until something got beat. then got put away with the issue waiting for next guy to be surprised by.
