With a borescope the piston dome shape will tell you a lot. 1974 Vettes ran open chamber heads with about 118 cc chambers. Check casting numbers under the valve cover to be sure.

10.4 C.R. Icon #IC 783 454 forged pistons with 27 cc dome for 118 cc open chamber heads, dome 0.290" high My pistons & heads.

GM 3999295 1971 9.0 CR LS6 forged pistons for open chamber heads about a 12cc dome. My builders short block.

Icon cast flat-tops # 1448HC 2 cc valve reliefs no dome about 8.0:1 with open chamber heads. Catalog picture.

OK, silly question, how do I get the borescope in there, in order to tell? And unless I miss my guess, that number is on the bottom side of the head, so you can't read it without removal.

Take out a spark plug and insert bore scope. Numbers on head are under valve cover if you want to know casting. BTW, this sort of thing would usually be a good idea to make your own new thread.

Thanks. Yes, this thread took a new direction, I agree it would have been better, in retrospect.

Thanks for the info.

While my friends have refused the discount colonoscopies,
Great minds think alike . Im doing my own phlebotomies what the hell lol

NIce reading actual gearhead stuff, not some ricer stage 3.5 whatever that is. Do the ls guys choose by reading specs or listening to YT clips and following trends
Imo better to buy from the little guys that have been around forever they have a lot more to risk w/reputation.
