Default Federal vs CA Car

Besides the emissions sticker and the tank sticker, is there any obvious way to tell a CA from a Federal car? I was going to order a replacement sticker since mine is so beat up. Almost positive it’s a federal car but curious if there is a way to make sure.

What year? And the tank sticker would have nothing to do with it. In general, California emissions are more restrictive than federal emissions, less vapor, exhaust emissions.

If your car has the original engine, the engine code may indicate CA vs. Federal emissions. This site has the codes, and a bunch of other useful info. The code on my numbers-matching 80 showed it was always a 4-speed car, for example.

Use the code on your original sticker unless you have reason to believe it's been replaced.

73. Thought the tank sticker had the CA emissions option. Academic in this case as I don’t have it.

Original motor is long gone. Interesting site though. Thanks for the link.

Thats the point. Original emissions sticker is there but beat up and hard to read.

And it does! I thought your question had to do with the mechanics of emissions that differentiated the operations of a federal from a CA car.

Interesting that when we were writing/revising the 73/74 NCRS judging manual, we had some major discussions around the inclusion of emission RPO Codes and especially around CA emission 1973 CA codes or YF5. Members claimed "no one knows what they are!" Yet by later C3, GM routinely listed on buildsheets either NB2 (federal), NA6 (high-altitude) or YF5. They became options.

h4ca,
Do you mean they could not determine what precisely was included with YF5?

Had to do with the familiarity of YF5 rather than what made up YF5. My point was moving forward, C3 owners would see it with a greater frequency such as in the Black Book so, get used to it!
