How much of the rear tire carrier do I have to remove to get to the sending unit?
Anything else I need to know?
TIA

All of the spare carrier has to come out.....
Make sure you buy a new O-ring....lube it with silicone lube and slightly bend the “leader” tabs on the lock ring to help you guide it in....these are a pain in the ***....
Spent the morning taking off the rear tire carrier.
Removed sending unit to find a completely encrusted sock! WTF
Can't believe it ran at all!
Ordered a new unit, will be here fri!
The 'sending unit' is on top...bayonetted to the top of the tank....remove through the filler hole after you remove the flap/rubbercatch pocket....you'll see it clearly.
While you're farting around in there see if you can see your tank sticker!

If the OP removed the spare tire carrier to access the sending unit, this is what it looks like. The early C3 tanks had the sending unit, and fuel feed, including sock, on the bottom. Draining the tank is mandatory unless you want a fuel shower. This is the new tank I installed in my 69 a few years ago. The fuel line with the 90 degree bend, and small vertical hose are for the fuel return, from the pump to the tank to keep the fuel cool.

I'm beginning to wonder if the Encrusted Filter on the old sending unit was the problem all along? WTF
The car is jacked up in the rear pointing down my sloped driveway.
I put in the new sending unit w/o too much trouble.
The special wrench helped.
After 2 gal there is still nothing coming out of the bung?
While I was under the car, I blew into the fuel line to see it there was a plug?
It didn't take much to see there was no blockage.
Now I wonder if there is a problem elsewhere?
Today I will lower rear until I get gas flowing into fuel line.
After that I will check for problems going from rear to front.
Or should I start w/fuel pump and go back to the tank?
Then I have to wonder if I put the FP in correctly?
Is there an easy way to check for FP function?

When the car is level, fuel from the tank will flow to the fuel pump by gravity, assuming there is no blockage. Test by removing the input line to the FP. You can test the FP by removing the fuel line at the carb, putting a short piece of fuel hose going into a catch can. With the ignition disabled, crank the engine. Fuel should spurt into the catch can. Use caution, fuel and sparks can be dangerous.
I have a line attached to the fuel bung.
Even level, no fuel from bung! WTF
I need something to catch the fuel in the tank.
Then I can check the bung?
I can't imagine what the problem is?
Once I get the bung flowing.
I can follow it to the FP!
I pumped out the gas in the tank and reinstalled the fuel bung.
I noticed the intake screen for the bung sits a little high off the bottom of the tank.
Bending it closer to the bottom was not an option.
So I put almost 4 gal back in the tank.
Pulled the fuel line and NOTHING! WTF
I ran a long zip tie in the bung and no obstruction was found.
I'm out of ideas, nothing seems to work! OMG
I can't trouble shoot my fuel system w/o fuel!
Nothing is getting past the mesh sock on the end of the intake.
After I remove the filter to get some fuel flowing.
What can I replace the filter with?
I want something correct.
Having the filter drifting around in the tank does not sound good.
If it sounds like I am unhappy w/situation.
You are right!
Forum: What I am calling a filter is referred to as a Strainer.
It is listed as a press fit.
I intend to remove the current strainer and see why NO Fuel is flowing.
It is the first problem in my system.
After making sure I had several gal of gas.
And still no flow!
I was convinced that the strainer was bad?
So I pumped out the gas that I had put in.
Looking through the gas tank I could see that there was still gas in the bottom.
Not wanting a mess, I used a small can for the leftover!
What came out was a nasty mess.
It looked like rust and dirt that was floating around!
I have no idea where it came from?
But I think it is the problem!
The bad gas is so nasty I have no idea of what to do w/it?
Blowing through the Sending unit showed no plug!
So now I'm thinking about giving the tank a good cleaning and starting over?
Any suggestions for an easy to do this?
I don't want to drop the tank if at all possible?
A while back I had water in the tank.
I wiped the insides w/stick and a rag.
I thought I did a good job?
Is it possible I loosened up the rust and scale?
Looking through the gas cap I can see some crap that I don't think should be there!
That half gal of sludge in the bottom of my tank scared me.
Is water heavier than gas?
Could the water/sludge prevent gas from making it to the strainer?
I have a nice motor and seeing it destroyed.
Or just running poorly due to dirt!
Is unacceptable!
So now I am left with two choices.
Do I try and give the tank a good cleaning?
Or do I get a new/different tank?
I wonder if I should have any extras such as a return line installed?
A forum member got a fancy tank w/all the bells and whistles.
I don't want to do this again, I don't want to do it this time! OMG

Definitely replace the the return and supply hoses as seen in my post #25 above. You’ll be glad you did.
