Instead of a few confusing paragraphs here, check out YouTube, set a distributor>SBC.

Lars Grimsrud email v8fastcars@msn.com

email him ... ask for his papers on HEI install & HEI timing and QJet carb adjustment-tune etc.

And how's about this ... Wikipedia has a page on Lars ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lars_Grimsrud ... that cat gets around!

the vacuum advance should be pointing out towards the passenger side. What I do is I have an old cap with the center cut out but the towers still intact. With this cap on the dizzy, I point the rotor at the number 2 tower and let it drop down in. It will clock towards number one. If it stopns on the oil pump rod I pull it and I flip over the dizzy and see where the slot is. Then shine a flash light down the hole and use a long screw driver to align the oil pump slot. It takes a little patience but its easy. Lots of trial and error but no real challenge.

In reality you can put the dizzy in and see where the rotor is and make that your number one tower. You just need the vacuum advance in the right place if you are using the stock shielding

Since you removed it with the motor at TDC you can just make a new mark on your distributor. Then when you install it without the cap you can try to roughly line the rotor with your mark. Just point in the general area of #1 and it will fire so you can quickly time it with your light.
