I have a 1982 CE and I am a non-mechanical guy. I read the thread about EGR valves and it seems that the consensus is that I can remove the EGR valve with a possible upside to performance and no downside. My question is do I need to also have to remove the EGR solenoid? What about the rest of the smog control system? Any advice is appreciated.

Take it all off including the AIR pump and solenoids. Put a blank-off plate on the EGR port on your CF manifold. You may see a little more performance, but don't count on it, but less stuff to worry about in the end. You may see that your vacuum may go up, which is nice if you had any leaks somewhere. Also, if you pull it all off, you need to cap off your AIR tubes to the exhaust. There are lots of little things you can do to a CFI motor to make them run well. They are VERY fuel pressure sensitive, knowing what it is at now is a huge factor for more performance...even bone stock. Do you know what it is set to?

All great info. I do not know what it is set at but will find out. Am getting it ready for a trip along RT 66 and then up through PNW and back through Canada so am trying to eliminate most things that can or will go wrong. Will definitely remove all smog control at some point but will keep in case I sell to someone who WILL need it.

You won't believe the difference in engine performance when your FP is at the right setting. The motor will pull all the way to reline in every gear with no hesitation. You may need to replace your fuel pump though if it is original and it can not handle the FP increase of 13psi. BTW, 13psi is within GM spec. If that is the case, replace it with the corvette 85-87 pump, it's a direct fit replacement and will flow a little more and supply the TBs with all the fuel you need at 13psi. I would also suggest you rebuild your TBs before doing that if they are old and you do not know the condition of them. The bladders can tear from being old and weak and can cause you issues. It is a simple process to rebuild, just take your time when tearing them down. PM me and I can get you more info on this if you like. One more thing, you will need to measure the fuel pressure in-between both TBs. Measuring before the passenger side TB will not be an accurate read of fuel pressure.
