Default Mystery wire, thoughts?

I know this is a long-shot, but can any of the experts here identify what this wire is and where it should go? It just appeared after the last drive a few days ago. I have tried to see where it snakes up under the dash, but that space is extremely tight. I suspect a bubba mod. Of note, the brake lights are not currently working, but looking over pictures of the brake switch I do not see that this wire is a part of it. 1968 late build convertible.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I can’t tell you what it is, but I replaced the dash harness on my 68 and that doesn’t look factory to me. Probably a Bubba mod as you said. My brake lights weren’t working and it was a loose connection at the brake switch.

If you want you can take a simple volt meter and check it to see what it could be. In the DC voltage mode measure and see if there is any 12V present when car is in the various ignition switch positions including running (put the negative lead of the meter to a good chassis ground point). If no voltages are present then put the meter in low ohms range and with car off see if it is a ground wire (again ground the negative lead to the chassis). It would read near zero ohms on the low range if a ground. If it might be an extra speaker wire then put the meter in low voltage mode again and play the music and see if it moves around to the music.

If you want to put it back up in the dash wrap the end connection in electricians tape and tie wrap it up out of the way. I probably took out at least 8 feet of extra bubba wires in my 68 most of which went nowhere.

Follow the wire and see where it goes?

I agree to follow it where it goes. It may have been plugged into the fuse box

I think it goes into the fuse box at a empty blade connector position. My 81 uses 2 such wires for seat power and interior lights.

From the picture it looks to be an aftermarket male plug. See if there is a female connector under the dash that is not plugged in.

Use a volt meter and see if it's live (+12volts) when the key is both on or off.

I would follow the wire.

Speaker wire would be female as the terminals on the speaker are male.

Most live terminal ends should be female so they do not ground when / if they become unplugged.

Probably used for an aftermarket accessory.
