Shifter Rattle?
Anyone else have a problem with their factory T handle shifter rattling? Mine just chatters away at around 2500- 3000rpm. It's driving me crazy! :crazy: Any suggestions?

My 64 GTO did that and it almost drove me crazy, I replaced the factory shifter with a Hurst shifter and it stopped the rattle. :D The problem apparently was caused by loose linkage. I have heard a particular part causing the shifter to rattle, but for the life of me I can't remember exactly what was that was causing the problem.

when I took it apart, I noticed that there is a lttle play in the cotter pin that holds the shifter to the tranny. Is there any way to tighten that or is it even supposed to be like that?

I rebuilt mine at least 3 times and never could get the rattle out. I finally replaced it with a Hurst Competition Plus. No more rattles and a much nicer and more precise feel. If you want the stock look you can get a handle for the hurst that looks just like the original shift handle.

Mine was doing it too. I thought maybe the spring was too short but that wasn't it. Finally isolated it down to the skinny rod that hangs out of the T-handle. Find a way to stop that rod from rattling around and your problems may be solved. A little epoxy may do the trick..
