Default help building a 427

ok i had a 396 just rebuilt after starting found jb weld in a corner well letssay for now motor gone. ok i have a 396 crank now cam 480 lift and a 1973 454 block . from what i have read the 396 will go in the 454 block . i have the 702 heads from the 396 ust went threw the machine shop so i coould match the pistons on the 396 they had about 3/8 inch of a dome closed chamer. wow i got to drive it about a mile had some power no dinging or pre dent.knock . im not going to take the motor over 6000 rpm so with those heads on the 454 but now has the 396 crank slash now a 427 can i use the .140 dome pistons or should go little smaller for gas friendly

Have you worked out the actual compression ratio of the 396 and the 427? The cam you have seems pretty mild...so I'm guessing it made stout cylinder pressure. The two engines will have same piston speed...just a larger bore. I wouldn't expect any issues..should act similar if compression is the same.

So, you are trying to build a budget motor out of parts on hand? the 396 crank is the same as 427, but balanced differently. both internal balance, but the heavier pistons have to be compensated for. rods are the same. 454 pistons have a higher pin height. put 396 crank with them and they stop 1/8th inch below top of bore. best budget build is scare up a flat piston 454 and re-ring it and run those bathtub chamber 396 heads. be about 9 to 1. or find a rotating assy and install in the 73 block. what is with the JB Weld? cracks can be fixed. and that stock .480 truck or boat cam is worth 5 cents a pound-unless putting this in a truck or boat. post pics of JB and damage. google lock'n'stitch.
