Default Need Help re: Serpentine belt 1970 454

1970 454

I am having trouble sourcing in the UK a fan belt (the one that goes round the crankshaft and water pump pulley - as per diagram attached, could anyone kindly measure the outside circumference of this belt and let me know what size it is?

Regards
Paul

Many thanks for taking the trouble to measure that for me, I have found a local dealer now in the UK that will provide a 32" belt for me for just a few pounds, and I can collect rather than wait for two weeks whilst it is being shipped and paying international shipping costs.

Kind regards
Paul

just make sure you check the measurement, most belts are sized by the effective length NOT the outside circumference.... That belt is a 31.5" belt (P/N 15315 in this case)

Not to confuse things, but I use a 32" belt for the crank to water pump on my '71 454, Gates #7320. I have factory AC and it has the idler pulley that pushes in against the belt.
I use the same size belts as Mooser, but the Crank WP Belt and the Alternator Belt sizes are reversed.

Crank WP Belt 15320, Gates 7320
P/S Belt 15435, Gates 7435
Alt Belt 15315, Gates 7315....The Alt Pulley is a smaller diameter on factory AC 454's

Crank WP Belt 15315, 11A0800 Dayco TopCog, Gates 7315
P/S Belt 15435, 11A1105 Dayco TopCog, Gates 7435
Alt Belt 15320, 11A0815 Dayco TopCog (was using a 15310 but too close to the valve cover), Gates 7320

The crank to water pump belt pretty much requires that you loose off the fan pulley bolts and tilt the pulley to get it on but it's not bad

You could try the local parts store 32" belt to see if it gives you a tight fit, otherwise you'll need to get the 31.5" belt.

Good luck.

If you can get Gates brand belts, the number is #7315.... used without the idler/tensioner pulley. It has just the right amount of tension.

Default One More Reuest - fan belt 1970 454

Hope you won't mind another request, but decided to replace the main belt as well. Do you know the Gates part number or the length of this belt (see attachment), so I can source it in the UK.

Kind regards
Paul

Gates 7435.

Paul, we refer to that belt as the Power Steering Belt. If you are using the same sizes as Mooser, I added the Gates sizes in red for the 3 belts in post #6.

Just for reference, if you replace the alternator belt, you should have the correct alternator pulley on yours if it came without factory air. It is slightly larger in diameter than mine. Factory air big blocks have a smaller diameter alternator pulley to allow higher rpm's. I mentioned this because it can affect the belt size.

454's without A/C use alt. pulley 3829193, 3 5/8" O.D.
454's with A/C use alt. pulley 3883978, 3" O.D.

FWIW
P/S Belt 15435, 11A1105 Dayco TopCog
Alt Belt 15320, 11A0815 Dayco TopCog (was using a 15310 but too close to the valve cover)

The last 3 digits are the belt effective length so like posted above, the P/S belt is x435 or 43.5" long, probably close to 44 measured around the outside of the belt. The P/S to Alt was a x310 belt so 31" but I moved up to a 32 to gain some clearance to the valve cover... then moved to the other side.
The second numbers are Metric 1105mm = 43.5" and 815mm = 32" belt (or at least close, they round to the closest 5mm
