Default Destroyed ring gear

So, been fighting some starter noises. Decided to try to shim starter. NOT a good idea. Lots of grinding noises and now the ring gear is destroyed. Wonder why they made the starter pinion harder than the ring gear.

Just getting into the nice driving weather too.

This is going to be a bear to replace. No lift, just jack stands. 496 BBC with Quicktime Bellhousing to T-56 Magnum. Not a lot of room to work. Lots of EFI plumbing and wiring behind the engine that will probably have to get moved out of the way. Sidepipes will not let engine angle much to get to bolts.Probably have to take those off as well.

Wonder if I can reuse the RST Twin Disc with a new flywheel. Only have about 14,000 miles on the clutch. Heck, maybe I can find a place around here to just replace the ring gear after I get it all apart. That way, everything is still all balanced and broken in together.

While you are at it.... I hope you've got a removable crossmember.

I was there-had everything all nice and pretty- all bolted together and the hyd clutch line fitting stripped out...

FWIW- the second time you have to drop it back out-it goes quicker!!!

Get a ring gear. Knock old one off. Put flywheel in the freezer overnight. Next day put ring gear in oven on broil or clean the hotter the better for 1 hour. The carefully install ring gear on flywheel. Should be good to go.

and the 3rd and 4th time are even easier. I do now have a lift and transmission jack. I can’t imagine doing this on my back and no lift. That T56 is HEAVY.

I got it on my back with a floor jack 8 years and one neck surgery ago. No lift, so up as high as possible on the jack stands. Harbor freight has a low lift tranny jack for $99. That may be the way to go.Going to call some machine shops this AM about ring gear replacement. That will save some $$$.

I know, but my car is so modified. Quicktime Bellhousing, LS-1 T-56 Magnum, custom driveshaft, etc. Torque values are all over the map and none of them are stock. We shall see how it goes.
