I ran the gas in the tank way down yesterday so that I won’t be elbow deep when I change the sock. Assuming I can get my hand through the filler hole, are there any tricks for removing the old sock or attaching the new one?
I had to chuckle this morning when looking at it closely. That fuel opening looks so huge whe you’re fueling up at the pump yet so small when trying to fit your hand through it.
Just a pressure fit on the steel pickup tube. Must have small hands or go get a boy no older than 10 who might be able to do it. Not bad though unscrewing the bottom.

I tried to get my wife to do it but believe it or not, she refused. Taking out the sender from underneath is easy and you can then clean out any debris from the bottom of the tank.
Starting to think this is the way to go. As a bonus, my guage read 1/8 when I ran out of gas yesterday. May replace the whole unit while I’m at it.
I did talk to my wife about doing this for me. I love the idea of calling the fire department on Mother’s Day to free her stuck hand but the cost was way too high: full spa day.

on my '72, i just bent the arm slightly, reinstalled sender and checked with a measured amount of gas on level ground.
kept doing this until it read correctly, well as best as i could anyway,
I saw who posted this and couldn't resist posting... For me, @ 6-4 with large hands I can't get into the filler neck to replace the sock. But two things I'd do.... 1, I'd drain the fuel from the car and remove the sender. 2) I'd bench test the sender before installing a new sock. 0 is empty and 90 ohms is full. So test the sucker before you put it back in the tank.
