The yellow wire is getting pinched right at the damaged area. You can see the collateral damage to the black plastic it lays on. Something makes me suspicious of what voltage is on that yellow wire. Kinda looks like high voltage spark energy is finding it's shortest path to ground on that coil frame. Can you measure the voltage on the yellow wire while engine is running? Over 10,000 volts should over range most meters - meaning your meter display won't give you a usable number or something like OR or maybe OL.

Whether you want to or not you will soon become a an ignition expert. Good luck and BTW multimeters are so cheap there's no excuse not to own one - every tool box. Many times Hobo Fake gives them away with any purchase.

Buddy and I had a look at it today. He believes it's the built in voltage regulator in the alternator. Also noted the power wire grommet on the back of the alternator had a pinch exposed wire. Replaced that.

Im going to buy a new multi meter tomorrow, mines pooched.

Inside the distributor, the round do-dad that's looks like a condenser (a-la points and condenser), what's that?

I was going to ask you, whatz sup with the condenser? If that's what it is. And why is there a wire to it? H-m-m-m-m. Very strange indeed. Likely some type of filter.

Was this a former Points / Condenser type distributor? Then switched over to HEI?

As far as I know it's the original distributor to the car, not the motor, it's long gone.

may not be the OEM distributor, for all I know.

UPDATE:

Step 1. Another new coil, another new ignition module, borrowed a known good alternator (internal voltage regulator), new plug wires, my previously purchased cap and rotor. Cleaned inside the distributor. Eight new gapped correctly spark plugs. Fired up perfect,....... tik, tik, tik, tik, tik, tik...............from the distributor. Noise increased with RPM. I have a video and audio clip, but no clue how to post it. Couldn't tell if it was electrical or mechanical.

2. Swapped the rotor, same noise. No damage on the tip.
3. Swapped the cap, same noise. No damage inside.
4. New plug wires, same noise.
5. Unplugged the tach, no noise. odd. Plugged it back it, noise was back. Inspected the third new coil, checked coil wire, burnt under the coil cover again. (Thats $140 in three coils if your keeping track)
6. Drank a beer.
7. Fed up, I went and bought a billet no-name distributor from the parts store.
8. Called a buddy over for another set of hands, swapped the distributor. Reinstalled the new plug wires. Put my alternator back on

Runs perfect. Better than it had in awhile. So, what was my problem? No idea, but the new dist seems to have solved it.

Buddy adjusted the timing some, to what I've got NFC.
He pulled some jets (mains?) and put in smaller ones (running very rich), one size bigger on the air bleeds (more air). Wow. what a difference. Feels like I've picked up 50% more HP, lol.

Hopefully the weather holds and I can drive the car to Toronto and back on the weekend. Oh yeah, made sure my road side assistance is paid up.

Have driven 150km nice the new parts were installed, not a hic-up, spit, sputter, my clothes don't stink after I get out out the car, the garage doesn't smell like fuel/oil anymore......

Magic I'm telling you .......PFM!

Glad to hear it's running so good. No clue on the burned up coils, but if it were me, after burning up three of them, I'd have repeated step 6 a few more times! :
