Many people recommend the TransGo unit over the B&M shift kit. I'm not sure why exactly -- I think it does more than simply raise line pressure...

Page Paul79. (the Canadian dude.) He put one in his TH-350. He's got some good pics of it as well.

Mine (TransGo) is not a "shift kit" per se. It is a shift "improver" kit. I did not want the tires to chirp on every shift. But it certainly does sharpen up the shift duration. And apparently cuts down on transmission disc wear from slippage. There is not much to see in the kit but the instructions are below. And it is available for the TH400.

I have a B&M in my '75's TH400. Medium setting. Shifts nice and firm during normal driving and will really bust the áss end loose during WOT.

I've got one of those Gil Younger (I think that's the name? Has a 1960's looking guy on the front) kits for a TH350. Was going to go in my V8 Monza but never got around to installing it. That kit looked more impressive than the B&M but in the end I think both achieve the same results.

Either way I wouldn't own an automatic without a mildly aggressive shift kit.

I used the B&M shift improver kit when I had my Th400 still in. I went with the more agressive setting and it shifted good and firm. Not to harsh at all. Not for me anyway. Still got the TH400. Its for sale if anyones interested. 70k excellent shape, new modulator, new kickdown solonoid, B&M shift kit, stock convertor. Its the original 400 from my 73 Vette.

Do these "Shift Kits" allow you to shift your Automatic like a regular Manual Tranny??? Do you install these with the tranny still in the car or must it be removed?? So you basically get to shift from Low Gear, to Mid-Gear, to Drive and back again, instead of just leaving it in DRIVE....Yes??? :flag

Hey Al,
I used the TransGo shift re-programing kit. Nice quick shifts. The best upgrade I have done to date. I called TransGo and they recomended hole sizes for the plate that were not spec'ed in the instructions that would work best with the Vettes weight and drive train. Smooth but quick under normal driving but will snap your neck back when you "get on it" not bad for a 308 rear end!! You would prob break loose at all three gears!! I also installed a B&M stacked plate stile low press drop cooler up front. It has lowered the return line temp by 20 degrees. I called some trany shops in the area and they all recomended the TransGo kit.

How is the paint job?

KJL:
Are you running the Cooler as a stand-alone piece ... or do you continue to use it along with the cooler that's part of the radiator?

What are others' thoughts on their experience running a mid-size trans Cooler as stand-alone ... with NO radiator cooler?

I use it in-line with the rad cooler. The recomendations I have received were to use it in conjuntion with the rad cooler. Under normal conditions it may not matter but with high heat loads, the rad cooler is more efficient.

Joe,
I work at a GM dealer and our transmission specialist got it for me from "friends" in the transmission business. He installed it also. (I think you are alluding to the fact that the instructions state that it is for professional installers only.) My cost was $40CDN or about $26US. If you have difficulty locating one - and need one - I can get another and ship it off to you. You are not far south from Ottawa. Do let me know by e-mail.
