Default New ignition switch, How difficult?

My ignition switch will move without inserting the key. The battery has run down several times because the switch is not in the off position.

Can I replace the switch myself with basic tools and a beginners mechanical knowledge?

A point of information, the ignition lock cylinder is the part in the steering column head where you insert your key to lock and unlock the steering. This mechanical cylinder moves a rod that pushes and pulls on the ignition switch which is located down under the dash on top of the steering column. BTW, the lock cylinder is readily available from GM dealers or from most automotive stores. The standard column (non-adjustable) and the T&T column lock cylinders were all the same from 1969 through 1978.

So from what you have described, your lock cylinder is what needs to be replaced. The switch down under the dash is probably OK. There are only two special tools that are required to disassembly your steering column head and replace the lock cylinder. You will need a steering wheel hub puller and also it is most helpful to have a special bridge tool to compress the locking plate after the steering wheel is removed. I think you can borrow these special tools from Autozone or NAPA retail stores.

If you go to http://www.corvettefaq.com and look under steering. Depending on whether or not you have a standard (non adjustable) steering column or a T&T there are several papers at that websight that will take you step by step in replacing your lock cylinder.

The T&T papers that you should download are entitled:
Tilt & Telescoping Column 69-82 Disassembly & Repair Paper #1
Tilt & Telescoping Column 69-82 Disassembly & Repair Pic #1
Tilt & Telescoping 76 Steering Wheel and Horn Parts

If you have a standard column here are the papers at that sight to download:
Standard column Disassembly Instructions
Standard Column Disassebmly Pics #1
Steering Wheel and Horn Parts 1976-79 Std Column Pic #4

These papers will take you right through the process of replacing the lock cylinder step by step. I'm sure you can do it.

I rebuilt my column with the help of Jim's papers and e-mail help.... Thanks Jim... Pay close attention to the little tips he gives so you will only need to assemble it once. Not too hard to do........ just takes a little finesse' and patience.
