I want to take the rear dust shield off to clean and paint it. It seems like I have to remove the whole hub ! ? Is there something I am missing ? I am rebuilding brake calipers and parking brake hardware and have everything off except the hub / axle assy.
To replace the backing plate you have to pull the axle, wrecking the bearings in the process, and will end up rebuilding the arms. If they have never been rebuilt then they're due for sure. If they have been rebuilt and are in good shape, mask it off and paint it. If you do remove it just replace it.
Thx for explaining this. Looks like more work than I first thought, but at least it will be done completely. Think there are places you can have them rebuilt?

Sure, there's Bairs Corvettes out of Linesville, Pennsylvania; Vansteel out of Clearwater, Florida and this guy in New Haven, Connecticut, Gary Ramadi, who comes very highly recommended.
Any of them should be able to handle a rebuild and do it on a regular basis, so you know it will be done correctly. It's not a job you want to do over again due to a lack of experience.
Vansteel did the rear bearings on my 68 convert and installed the new backing plate/dust cover. They did a good job. Getting the bearings installed correctly is not a job for someone who has not done it previously.
I am holding a free seminar on how to do this job, what to look for and what methods are used next week in CT. It is open to all non vendor corvette owners. These type of seminars are few and far between.
