High cranking compression pressure
Checked the compression with a second gauge, got the same reading.
Checked for ballpark cam timing using a procedure suggested by Lars.
Cam timing appears to be in the ball park.
Replaced all plugs, plug wires, cleaned up and reset points and timing.
Checked the mechanical and vacuum advance.
Mechanical is all in a bit late, around 3400 RPM.
Vacuum advance provides 12 degrees.
Set the timing per Lars suggestion, seems much happier now, more test driving to do before I declare victory.
BTW: I replaced the plug wires I bought from the dealer back in 1992 with a set from Lectric Limited.
Very pleased with the Lectric Limited wires, fit is perfect, good quality.
The wires are shielded, big block with radio.
Turns out one of the wires from the dealer set was 2" short making the fit awkward, many of the shields were a bit short or off, disappointing quality compared to the Lectric Limited wires.
Wondering if the old plug wires may have been arcing under the shielding where I couldn't see.
