Default Borgesen Box Install

I"m installing a new Borgesen steering box on a 1979.
I'm at the point where I'm trying to collapse the steering column and it wont budge.
I've sprayed it with PB Blaster numerous times, and borrowed a 4 lb hammer.
I've banged it about as much as I can and cant get it to move.
Any suggestions?

Thanks

Andy

If you can't get it to move, then just remove the column, it's not that hard.

That way you can get a good look at it and work on it without trying to hit it on an angle while in the car.

A block of wood and a few hits and mine moved.

My 69 was the same way, the final solution was to have a friend hold a 2x4 over the end from the top and I went below with a 4#er, it finally moved. T

I wrecked the splines trying to do this in the car. Pull the column should be step one of the instructions. It takes less time to pull it out than it did to fix the splines with a Dremel. Once out, it took several hard whacks to get it.

Thank you all for your responses.
"Damaging the splines" is one of the things I'm concerned about with all of the hammering.
I'm going to give the hammer one more shot (no pun intended) and if it doesnt work I'll start removing the column.

Thanks again.

I did mine with the column out and it was surprisingly easy-just a few taps with a block of wood to protect the splines.

I removed the column, and the shaft collapsed pretty easily with a couple of whacks.
Thank you all for your input.

Question....the top of my steering box is about 1/4" from the exhaust header. Anyone have any concerns or issues with the headers overheating the box?

Thanks again.

1/4" might as well be a mile. Some have to dimple the header tube to make it fit. You will be fine!

Great to hear. Thank you.
I bought some Heatshield Thermaflex Sleeve material which I'm going to squeeze in between the box and header just to be safe.

Thanks again.

I lined up a screw jack (somehow for a straight shot) and a spacer and turned the screw on the jack , went easy. Tried the hammer and block, didn't like the way that was going.

Default Borgesen Box Install

I'm finishing up the install of the Borgesen Box.
I'm installing the steering column components and I'm in one of those situations where you finish an install and have an extra part.
The pin pictured below fell to the floor as I was removing the column from the car last week.
I cant figure out where it goes. I cant find it in the Assembly Manual or any other documentation.
Anyone have any ideas where this goes.

Thanks

Andy

Thank you very much! I should have thought to check Willcox.
The diagram is for 69 to 76. I have a 79. My column is a little different than those shown.
Is it safe to say that that pin just drops into the opening of the center of the steering shaft (just under the star bolt)?

I think your rod is #40 in the diagram (the basic tilt/tele functions for 79 should still be similar to this drawing). It's been 3-4 years since I tore my column apart, but if I remember correctly, that rod controls the telescoping function of the column (without it, your column won't 'lock', and can be pushed/pulled with little effort. I think there is some adjustment for it also - not 100% positive though.

I finished the Borgeson box install and am very happy with the results.
I wanted to thank everyone for their input and assistance.

I wanted to close the loop on the #40 rod discussed above.
The rod just slides into the center hollow of the steering shaft at the steering wheel end of the shaft, and sits just below the star screw.
It's purpose is to lock the telescoping function of the steering wheel.

Thanks again to all for your input on this install.
