Default My solution to a cold air box

I wanted to get a true cold air box functional on my 69, but wanted more clearance than the L88 system would give me. Wrestled with it and a guy at the paint shop came up with this idea. We ended up cutting the hood and just raising the front and leaving the back alone. Also ended up using the L88 cold air chamber as the air box tray. Riveted the L88 base to the tray and it came out great. Very light and sealed tightly to the hood. I can now get a 14x4 air cleaner under there. Will have more pics in my build thread as the car is headed home Monday.

Functionally, I think that’s a grood solution. Aesthetically, I’m not so sure but it is growing on me the more I look at it.

Lol, yea I hear you! I just wanted more clearance and remember Alan Rothman’s tests of the stock L88 system losing quite a bit of horsepower. Was going to bond the tall L88 scoop to my hood which looked great but still didn’t give me the room that I wanted. I checked the internet and they are some great cold air set ups around. Found a few on vintage racing Corvettes. The air chamber works perfectly as the tray as it has all the proper indents to clear the engine components. Hopefully with a 4 inch filter element in there it will perform!

Without a seal at the rear edge of the hood, how do you keep the hot engine compartment air out of the air inlet for the passenger compartment?

Nice work on the air box, BTW....

Nicely done! I am considering doing a ram air set up for mine.
Did you get the titanium spreader bar in? Please post a picture or two when you get a chance.

Gordon, it was Leroy’s idea. He is a great guy!

Thanks Dennis, shouldn’t be long now. Probably going to bring it down to GA in a couple of weeks as I won’t have any time to work on it until November.

David, as soon as I pick it up and am going to put the spreader bar on it. Will definitely post some pics! Thanks.
