PROBLEM: Last night I was replacing the tailshaft bushing in my '72 350/4-speed. When I got the seal out and could see in, I couldn't see any bushing. I put the bushing removal tool in, and couldn't get ahold of anything. So then I tried fitting the new bushing in place.......and it was LOOSE. Apparently the bushing wore completely away and has worn the case away just a bit. I really do not want to take the trans out as my car has the "fixed" crossmember. Any ideas? I just spoke with my machinist about knurling the OD of the bushing. I think that might take up the clearance enough that it will get me by until I convert to 5-speed in a couple years.
you are most likely gonna need a tail housing. you could try loctite on the bushing to see if it stays. an oversize bushing and necessary machine work will be more than a housing. and not a numbers-matching piece. on ebay a bunch of t10 housings but theumy are all 58 to 64. m20-21 housings about 120 bucks. You need to do some homework on which transmission you have.

I've read on quite a few threads on here that removing the tailhousing with the trans in place is impossible......and I believe it looking at what's in the way. I don't see any evidence of the old bushing at all. I'll get a brighter light and have another look tonight.

Reason: poor grammar
In talking with and old-time mechanic.....he advised using a product from Locktite - 660. It is made for filling gaps like I have. Up to .020" on the diameter. It's good up to 300F. I have the bushing at a machine shop having the OD knurled. I think between the two I can patch it back together to last me until the 5-speed conversion is in the budget.
