Default HEI Rebuild

My HEI is done for. Cap and rotor are bad, rusty pickup coil, lots of corrosion, etc. So, is it better to rebuild or replace? I've heard a lot about sketch aftermarket distributors.

If it's better to rebuild, any good guides out there? I know a few parts that I will need but I don't want to forget any since I will be ordering from rock auto to save a few bucks (shipping is dreadful).

Thanks.

You want little to zero later play on the shaft bush bearings, I may have changed ONE over the decades.....the end play needs adjusted with washers between the gear and the housing, trick is to avoid much of any up/down play when it's bolted in place, speaking of rotor/top....need make sure the weights/springs are ok on the pins...not all wallowed out.....need get correct weight/springs for your car too if needed.....obviously the vacuum advance pot renewed......now when it's apart, you need replace the sending coil and the black coil driver module.....make sure you get REAL AMERICAN made parts for those two....rotor button and cap are obvious....check close, they may be fine as is.....points are obvious.....

Check the centrifugal advance weights for oveled out holes or grooves worn in to the pivot pins. The plastic bushings fail and then its metal on metal. Lots of times if you see rust dust around there its from that.

If the distributor shaft busing is good and the advance pins are in good shape I would just rebuild your GM dist.

There're a few well regarded rebuilders on the Chevelle forum. Otherwise...get a DUI distributor.
