I've been told that Corvettes have specific water pumps. My '81 appears to be a short pump, as it is 5 5/8". My question is: is it a standard short pump, or is it configured differently. If I don't get the "Corvette" water pump, will I have pulley alignment or some kind of clearance issues?
since we dont know what manufacturer or part number you are considering it is hard to say whether that particular company makes the correct pump. All Corvette small block pumps are considered short pumps. Can you post a link to the pump you are considering?

No, yours is Not a "standard short" pump ... at least Not if it is OE.
Standard short is about 5.625" and was on vettes thru 1970. Beginning 1971 vette sbc pumps are a bit longer.
Yours should be about 5.795" or 5.8" with a 3/4" OD pilot. Ask for pump for 350ci 71 thru 82 corvette only.
If you use a standard the pulleys won't align properly.
also, both standard & vette can be had with 5/8" pilot ... your 81 pilot should be 3/4"
