I am about to remove the front springs on my 1979 with the intent of cutting them to lower the ride height.
I borrowed the compressor tool below from Autozone. It doesn't fit in the hole in the lower control are where the shock was removed.
I've seen a number of videos where people used this tool in C3 corvettes so am stumped as to why it wont fit.
Are there internal compressors of different sizes, or am I missing something?

You have to disassemble the tool, feed the arms into the spring through the shock mount hole by feeding it in sideways, and then re-assembling the tool inside the spring. For this reason, I recommend not using the tool, and just doing the spring removal as outlined in my Front End Rebuild Paper - as always, available from me via e-mail request.
The springs are removed and I didnt kill myself or anyone else.
I want to extend a special thanks to Lars for the great paper on front suspension rebuild, and for the great tip on installing the internal spring compressor!
