Default C3 fuel tank sending unit

I have a 68 coupe with sending unit problems. The sending unit appears to be fine with regard to resistance readings and movement outside of the tank. It is a replacement from Corvette Central or Ecklers, don't remember which. The problem is that it doesn't work right in the tank. The float does not float correctly. I take it out, put it in a tank of water and it works fine. Has anyone ever experienced this? Could the float part of the sending unit react differently in gas compared to water? I can reach in the tank and move the rod up and down and there appears to be nothing restricting movement but when I let it go, it sinks below the level of the fuel.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Not from a mechanical point of view, but from a physical point, I'd say your float has some water in it. When in the gas tank, it will partially or completely sink, as water is heavier than gasoline. Did you ever see gas floating on top of a puddle? Change your float and see what happens. Just my 2 cents.
