This is not a C3 specific question. I have chosen to post here because this engine will be going into my C3 and I am wondering what my engine actually is. I have never paid close attention to the dates codes before and now I am simply being nosy
Yesterday, I acquired a small block Chevy engine that I was told was a 358 (350 bored .040 over)
The block casting number at the rear near the bellhousing is GM 3970010 which, according to the information I have found so far, indicates that this block may have been used for any of the following choices: a "302" in 1969, a "327" in 1969, or a "350" in 1969 through 1980.
When checking the date code at the front of the block, I see the following K 07 02 CMP. From the information that I have found, I believe that this code indicates that this engine was cast at St. Catherines, Ontario on July 2nd. The CMP indicates that this engine was a tune port injected "305" for a 1991 Firebird.
Can someone clearly explain what I am working with?
CMP very well may be a 91' TPI 350 but the 3970010 trumps that......meaning it is a 69-80 4" bore block with drivers side dipstick.
A 91' will have a pass side dipstick and a one piece main seal.....also no provision for fuel pump.
Apparently, one of the decoder pages I looked at was a typo as it indicated a 305 with the L98 option for a 91 Firebird. I guess that is a 350 not a 305.
I was always under the impression that the block design was changed around 1985.
This engine has a driver's side dipstick and mechanical fuel pump. The heads are iron and center bolt style. I haven't pulled the valve covers to find the casting numbers yet.
same nastyz28 source shows code CJK as 1971 350 with 330HP LT1 and tur400 auto trans
I've had two '71 base C3 (one coupe, now roadster) ... both with 270HP L48 and TH400 auto trans ... both CJK code ...
... nothing about either car suggests anything but base motor.

CMR. not P. 74 lopo 350 from impala or 78 L82 from vette or Z28. Or 80 305, but not with 010 block. Pull valve covers and get head casting numbers and dates.

Thank you, that makes much more sense to me than from a 91 firebird based on the left side dipstick and block casting number
OK, heads are TBI junk. Are you running the motor as-is or building it? If it is an engine to make the car a driver, run it. If you are considering doing any performance upgrades, those heads gotta go.

Bottom line is you have a "Heinz 57" engine. The pieces are from all over the place. You can ID the pieces but you will never know what they all are unless you take it apart. The same "010" block was used on everything small block Chevy in every possible configuration from Corvettes to station wagons to pickup trucks for over a decade. The numbers really don't mean much anymore.
What didn’t make sense? You got hung up on the stamp up front....
You go by the casting number of the block....regardless of what the stamp up front says....
It can’t be both....it can’t be a 4” bore block and a 305 pass dipstick....
Jerk the heads off and see what you have....for the cost of head gaskets....I would NEVER run this engine without jerking the heads and pulling the pan to inspect and reseal anyhow.....putting engines in cars is a job to find out it is trash....
Clean it...reseal it, and detail it....you will thank yourself later...

Heinz 57 ... good analogy
block has 2-piece RMS ... and NO real possibility of fitting OE roller lifters
193 TBI head is about as poor an sbc piece as can be
in the pic of 193 head ... not certain, but seems it has self-guided rockers but also the tight pushrod hole (POOR combo) ... also ...
... is that simply condensate in those rockers ? ... or was PO making a milkshake ?
010 has a 4 in bore. Longer pad many times early block there will be a casting numbers with a clock identifying when block was cast. 010 also can come with 2 bolt mains. My guess its a rebuilt 87-95 trunk engine.

Not quite.
The engine code suffix stamp begins with "C" for "Car" application. A truck engine code suffix begins with "T" for truck application.
The engine stamp casting pad shape tells me it is from the mid 70's. Block casting date could be down low on the side of the engine close to oil pan rather than top rear of block as found on earlier castings.
All the "010" blocks are 2 bolt main or 4 bolt main, but functionally the same otherwise.

But it’s not because they stopped making 010 blocks in 1980...
It is a pre 1980 350 with 350 TBI heads and that is the most the OP will know until it is opened up to check.
