I was wondering as well..its like a putty not a tape..wonder what happens if not insulated as mine is crumbling..
not easy to tape

The above, Duct Seal Compound, is what I used on my Vintage Air install. Easy to use and seems to be permanent.

That's not for use outdoors so may not hold up in the long run.
It's important to the proper operation of the A/C that the sensing bulb be held tight against the pipe AND insulated against the outside heat from the engine compartment.
