First I'm spinning it CCW then CW. too much play?
Im still looking for the cause of my idle jumping 50 rpm sometimes.
Anyway, is this too much wear/play?
That needs to be replaced or rebuilt. The up/down, it's trying to climb the cam gear. there looks like an excessive amount of play in it. Probably cheaper and definitely faster to replace it.
HEI are known for excessive end-play
If you hold the rotor down and try wobbling it sideways without letting it climb, there shouldn't be much movement
Way to much end play clearance, that much climbing will change your timing.
.010 to .015 for aluminum distributors .005 to .007 for cast Iron distributors.
Funny I just saw a thread on this the other day.... .I have these specks on a poster sign right behind my distributor machine. Pull the distributor and check the end play

The distributor, due to how the orientation of the helic on the camshaft will not allow the distributor to "climb"...........the only time this may happen is during hard deceleration from a very high RPM.
It is still good practice to keep the endplay in spec. I like .010 to .015.
