I do not argue with the owner of a Vette about his claims about his car. It's his baby and even if he is wrong he will stand by it. I talked with the owner of a really nice looking small block, 4 speed 1968 at the Manassas cruise-in this past Saturday. The car was amazingly stock. Nice engine compartment, including all of the steel ignition shields, which usually have been removed by previous owners. The front fender side gills/vents had the SS trim pieces from the 1969 installed, but they looked nice. However- the car had side pipes and the rear valance did not have the cutouts for tailpipes. The owner claimed they came that way from the factory. I have an early 1968 and thought that side pipes were not available until the 1969 model year. Anyone know if side pipes could be factory ordered on a 1968 Vette?
Did the prior owner buy that car new? If so, and it was a late-build unit, the dealer may have installed the side pipes and changed the real valance before the owner even took possession....if the money was right.
I don't think there were ANY '68 cars built with side pipes at the factory.
Tell the owner to join the forum so we can argue with him.....
The side pipe option was not available until very late December 1968. I don't even think the dealers had the parts to convert any 68 cars prior to the production of the 69 cars.
The owner is misinformed and mistaken. He was most likely told this by the previous owner and overpayed for the car. But he will eventually learn the truth....when he attempts to sell it.
