Setting lash while running got a bad rep early on because of the oil spray, dripping oil on the exhaust, smoke everywhere. Now, there are spray clips to contain that or clever ways to use an old valvecover see post 3.
I just use a long piece of cardboard, two inches high, between the valvesprings and the valvecover ledge, plus the 8 clips. No spray. No dripping. No smoke. Fast, easy, fairly accurate.

And the unfamiliar get even more confused/frustrated not knowing which method to choose.

If you look closely at post #3 you will see some oil on the tip of the rocker. That's the droplets that will try to get on your exhaust at start-up. If you wish to duplicate this valvecover using a scrap yard piece, I think I would leave more cover material over the spring / retainer area and cut the upper part a tad higher to clear your "anti-spray clips".
You only need to get at the rocker nut at this time. So the more splash protection / more coverage the better. The spray clips will divert the oil but not shut it off completely.
No need for cover gasket and two bolts, on the bottom, finger-tight will hold the cover.

Hello Everyone

Thanks for all of the support

I am grateful for all the folks who have helped me.

I purchased the clips and reset lash while engine was running.

I must admit this is the way I will go in the future as i was able to back off the tension and hear as well as feel the tapping/clacking.

Slowly tightened up nut until tapping stopped then (2) 1/4 turns.

Engine runs great no weird noises and smoother.

Installed clips and made a deflector with foil. worked great
