Default 75 won't back up!

My 1975 4 speed was shifting fine. Then when you put it in reverse, it would try to backup but acted like my foot was on the brake (it wasn't). if you held in the clutch you could push it. Then it got to where it was locked up tight in reverse like you had the brakes on. it would go forward fine but not backup.I took the rear rotors off, backed off the e-brake adjusters, left the rotors off while on jack stands, started it, Went thru the gears and still the axles would turn free in forward gears but in reverse they would stop like you jumped on the brakes (both rotors were still off & ebrake disconnected) and they engine would start to bog down. Any Thoughts?

Are you in neutral when your in neutral? It might be that it's in a forward gear in neutral. So then it is in 2 gears once shifted into reverse.

check the bolts that hold the shift rods to the levers on the side of the case. There are three of them 1/2, 3/4, and reverse. If they loosen you can engage two gears at the same time and the car will not move.

Thanks for the thought.. When I go to reverse The rear axles start to turn about a 1/2 revolution then stop. when in neutral it will push forward all day long but the minute you try to back it up it locks up like the brakes are on.

I will give that a try.The rods seemed very loose when I checked them to see if they were stuck on each other. I'll let you know, Thanks

While you are under the car, also check the bolts that secure the shifter to the mount. If the bolts are loose, especially the lower bolt, the reverse linkage can get jammed and lock the car out of reverse. I would also make the tool to adjust the linkage. The tool fits into the neutral gate of the shifter. I made one out of flat stock aluminum. I drilled a hole in it and tied a piece of string to it so I can easily pull it out. Jerry

I broke a differential once from abusing it. Had similar symptoms. Any noise from the diffuser in forward motion?
